WELCOME TO ASTRAKHAN STATE MEDICAL ACADEMY!

Astrakhan is a big centre of oil and gas industry. It is situated on the bank of the Volga river, not far from the Caspian Sea. It is rich in vegetables, fruits, rice and fish. ASMA is one of the oldest medical institutions in Russia. In 2003, it is 85 years since the ASMA was founded. During the years of its existence the ASMA has trained more than 23000 physicians. Many outstanding scientists worked at the Medical Academy and contributed much to the rapid development of the Academy as a powerful scientific medical and educational center on the Lower Volga. We should mention professors A.T. Lydsky, P.M. Toporkov, N.I. Artemyev, L.Ye. Karshina and many others who are well known in the world and national science.

At present the physicians with ASMA diplomas are working in different parts of Russia and abroad. Wide recognition of the Academy in the country, high qualification of its graduates are connected with the brilliant constellation of scientists who worked at the Academy and had a large number of the followers: professors N.I. Fyodorov, V.A. Gambursev, I.N. Alamdarov, V.B. Suchkov, V.M. Bahl and others.

Several scientific schools are founded at the Academy: embryology (prof. N.V. Popova-Latkina, A.S. Rudan, M.B. Novikov), cancero-embryonal antigens (prof. Ju.S. Tatarinov, A.V. Afanasyeva), stomach surgery (prof. V.G. Valter), therapy (Ya.A. Makarevich, P.P. Proshina, B.N. Levitan, A.A. Panov, T.N. Panova), urology (D.D. Murvanidze, N.M. Antonov, V.M. Miroshnikov). etc.

The Academy's research efforts are focused on the problems of mother-and-child health, oncology, gastroenterology, infectious pathology, medical ecology as well as morphofunctional organization of the living system in normal, pathological and individual development.

Every year Academy publishes about 1000 research papers in different central and regional issues, takes part in scientific conferences, symposia and congresses. Each chair has students' research section, Russian and foreign students take part in them. In 1986 the Academy received a new comfortable building. At present the Academy has two buildings for classes, five student hostels and a training basis of 30 municipal curative - preventive establishments. All clinical bases are equipped with modern facilities to train students at a higher scientific and professional level. In particular, all types of US-diagnostics, thermovision, angiography, endoscopic technique, highly effective means of treatment by hyperbaric oxygenation, laser therapy, modern efferent methods of de-toxication and many others are widely used here.

In 1995 the Astrakhan State Medical Institute was renamed into the Astrakhan State Medical Academy.

At present there are ten Faculties at the Academy:

* Faculty of Extracurricular Education

About 60 chairs of the Academy are staffed with 486 instructors, including 64 professors and 285 candidates of sciences, many of them are the members of various international academies of science.

There is a fundamental scientific library. It can provide everybody with update bibliographic data through its computer system. Many chairs are equipped with computer classes.

Industrious students of the Academy can have a rest in sports and health recreation camp on the picturesque river bank, at eight branches of the Faculty of extracurricular education, art and sports club or student's theatre.

ASMA has a good experience in the preparation of the foreign students. In the last two decades around 2500 students from more than 50 countries graduated from the Academy. At present many students from Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America study at the Faculty of Foreign Students.

Duration of the course at the Faculty of General Medicine is_6_years. The medium of instruction is English and Russian. During the whole period of study textbooks, course materials, free Internet access are provided to students.

After completion a graduate gets the "Doctor of Medicine" degree, with specialization in therapy, surgery, ophthalmology, infectious diseases, dermatology, nervous diseases, psychiatry, radiotherapy, traumatology and orthopedics, medical jurisprudence, phthisiatry, anesthesiology and reanimation, obstetrics and gynecology, clinical biochemistry.

The academic year begins in September 1, every year. But the students can get admission to the preparatory faculty up to December. The preparatory faculty trains the foreign students for their study in the main course of medicine.

The Academy will provide the students with the hostel which may cost 450 rubles per month for one person. Books and Internet connections are available for the students. The students are not only busy with their studies, they can do the scientific research work and they can also manage to find time for sports - football, swimming, tennis, etc.

Climate in Astrakhan is warm. Astrakhan is connected with Moscow by rail, air and river routes. It stands near the Caspian Sea, on the Banks of the Volga river to the south of Moscow.
