In October, 2006 100 years to the Russian state medical university, in the past 2-nd Moscow Lenin's awards the state medical institute are executed by it. During existence at the Russian state medical university a number of basic initiatives in the field of the maximum medical formation was successfully realized.

In 1930 for the first time in a world practice in reply to a crisis situation in children's public health services of the country has been created pediatric faculty, here 75 years invariable confirming the necessity to practical public health services.

With 1939 on 1944 in 2ом МОЛГМИ function military faculty which graduates have brought ощутимый the contribution to business of the Great Victory and post-war restoration of public health services.

In 1963г. Preclinical courses are delivered in 4 main buildings of the University which are located in the centre of the city. The Regional Cardiology Centre housing the University department of Cardiology is one of the best cardiological clinics in Russia.

Academic Year

The academic year has two semesters. 1st semester starts on September 1 and ends late January followed by two weeks of holidays. 2nd semester starts in mid-February and ends in late June. July and August are University holidays.

Kazan State Medical University

Kazan State Medical University is a multi-functional and multileveled state institution of higher learning in medicine. It meets both personal and social needs in acquiring education in medicine, in developing bio-medical and clinical sciences, as well as broadening scientific knowledge of medical science. Kazan State Medical University (KSMU) functions on the basis of self-governance and belongs to the system of higher education and scientific research of the Ministry of Health of Russia. The highest body of KSMU self-governance is Academic Council which works in accordance with university’s regulations.
On March 6, 1994 the university was issued with a license by the State Committee of Russian Federation of Higher Education which grants the right to perform activities in the field of professional education. Under the auspices of KSMU there work a pharmaceutical and two medical colleges in Kazan, one medical college in Mary El Republic, lycee and bio-medical classes on the secondary school basis. This complex educational system in the framework of the university provides the continuos higher education of medicine. KSMU carries on an aimed preparation of experts in different fields of medicine for 10 republics, Povolzhie and Ural regions.
University has two major periodical publications which come out since the end of XIX century, they are: “Neurology Newsletter” and “Kazan Medical Journal”. In 1995 the first issue of “Kazan Stomatology Newsletter” was published and in 1996 journal “Novitas” came out. University’s own newspaper “Kazan Practitioner” has been established in 1934.

History

University is one the academic institutions, among Moscow and St. Petersburg surgical-medical academies, which was one of the founders of higher medical education on the territory of modern Russia. We highly respect the names of out first teachers and founders of the Kazan Medical school: Yohan-Friderich Erdman, Karl Fuks, Evgeny Aristov, Nikanor Skandovky, and Franz Elachich.
In the XIX century the university remained the only institution which prepared doctors for the regions of Povolzhie, Ural and Siberia.
In 60-90’s of the past century there were formed schools of medical science which gained European recognition. The history of science will always remember the names of highly acknowledged medicine men from Kazan: anatomists V.N. Tonkov and V.N. Ternovsky; histologists K.A. Arnshtein and A.N. Mislavsky; biochemists A.Y. Danilevsky and V.A. Engelgardt; physiologists N.O. Kovalevsky and N.A. Mislavsky; pathologists V.V. Pashutin and A.D. Ado, A.V. Petrov and N.M Lubimov; pharamcologists A.M. Dogel and V.N. Boldyrev; therapeutists N.A. Vinogradov and S.S. Zimnitsky; surgeons V.I. Razumovsky and A.V. Vishnevsky; gynecologists N.N. Fenomenov and V.S. gruzdev; psychoneurologists V.M. Bekhterev and L.O. Darshkevich; oculist E.V. Adamyuk; dermatologist A.G.Ge; hygienists A.I. Yakoby and Y Kapustin.
The highly recognized alumnae of the university are the medical scientists, such as A.D. Speransky, N.G. Kolosov, B.I. Lavrentiev, P.F. Zdrodovsky, I.P. Razenkov, A.V Kibyakov, K.M. Bykov and many others. Among the disciples of the university 27 are the corresponding members of the Medical Academy of Russia. Among the world discoveries there are: the process of oxidational phosphorusation (V.A. Engelgardt, 1930); experimental proof of the role of mediator in the neuromuscular synapse (A.V. Kibyakov, 1933); the phenomenon of scleral sinus blockade (A.P. Nesterov, 1985).
The university has become nationally recognized in training of specialists in the medical field. The names of the scientist are: A.G. Teregulov, S.M. Kurbangaleev, F.G. Mukhmediarov, M.A. Erzin, A.H. Kazan
Kazan is the capital of Tatarstan Republic. It’s the city which was historically formed, on one hand, as a border between the East and the West, on the other hand, as the place where the two met. Kazan became the center of coexisting cultures which bonded over time and benefited one from another - here the East meets the West, the slavs, the turks, the tatars, the chuvash, the mari, the bashkir, the mordvy share traditions, experiences and wisdom. Kazan is situated on the bank of Volga river in the central part of Russia. Kazan - is a big industrial center with the population over 1,1 million people, there is a railway, motor-way and airport junction, as well as the largest river port on the Volga.
Kazan is one of the most acknowledged centers of science, culture and education. There are 14 higher education institutions in Kazan, among them is the well-known Kazan State University, Academy of Science of Tatarstan and the of Scientific Center of the Academy of Science of Russia; 7 professional theaters; philharmony; symphonic orchestra; museums and libraries. Kazan is connected with the names of famous thinkers, writers and scientists, such as L.N. Tolstoy, A.M. Gorky, G. Tukai, N.I. Lobachevsky, A.M. Butlerov, F.I. Shalyapin and many others. Shalyapin International Opera Festival, Nuriev Festival of Classical Ballet, Jazz Festival are the cultural events traditionally take place each year.
The climate in Kazan is temperate with pleasant warm summers and winters with mild cold and beautiful snow.

Clinical investigations
The basic branches of the departments of pediatric faculty are the investigations of the age peculiarities of pathology and normal state of child. They work out the problems of adaptive possibilities of children, immunological reactivity in acute and chronic inflammatory diseases, diagnosis and endotoxicosis treatment in childhood and microecology of child.
The departments of therapy perform scientific research work in the fields of prophylactics and effective treatment of cardiovascular diseases. The priority trends are the investigations of the pathogenesis membrane mechanisms of hypertension, atherosclerosis, myocardial infraction and rheumatoid arthritis.
Surgical departments are the leaders of Russian medicine in the field of laser surgery and endosurgery. Regional center of cardiovascular surgery is formed in one of the departments of the university.
The faculty of prophylactic medicine deals with the problems of ecology, environmental pollution in oil-fields of the Tatarstan Republic. They created the program of training doctor-ecologist for all medical institutions of Russia.
The dental school of the university is well-known for developing new constructions of dentures, implants, orthopedic materials with forms ‘memory.’
Clinical training is performed at 54 units of the Ministry of Public Health of the Republic Tatarstan. There are 33 general hospitals, outpatients departments, 21 policlinics, maternity houses, dental polyclinics, etc. The total number of beds is 8600. There are 4315 therapeutic, 2120 - pediatric, 1210 - surgical and 440 - gynecological beds, etc.

Clinical Units
Clinical training of the medical pediatric and dental faculties students is provided in 54 medical institutions. There are hospitals, maternity houses, special diagnostic centers, out-patients units and 20 polyclinics including dental and children’s. Clinical units have 8600 beds. University dental polyclinic has 98 dental chairs. Republican and 8 city centers of sanitation and epidemiological control with the specialized departments and laboratories are used for teaching the students of prophylactic medicine faculty. Pharmaceutical faculty uses for training its students 65 pharmacies with the laboratories in Republic Tatarstan, 18 pharmacies in Chyvachia and some commercial pharmaceutical units.

Postgraduate and continuing education
The faculty of Postgraduate education was founded in 1994. The following types of graduate studies are being held:

o Advanced primary specialization of the alumnus - medical internship (each year 100 students are accepted)
o Professional postgraduate training of the experts - clinical residency (65-70 students per year)
o Thematic and general advanced courses of doctors and pharmaceutists with work experience (260-320 students per year)
o advancing the qualification of college teachers (90-100 per year)
o providing methodical help, organization of qualified examinations for interns from the medical institutions in Tatarstan and Mary El (annual number of alumnus 380-580). Primary specialization of doctors and pharmaceutists on 35 specializations. The program is based on the fundamental disciplines (clinical, pathological physiology, pathologic anatomy, clinical pharmacology and biochemistry, medical psychology). The training for the major specialization includes work in class as well as independent work with patients under the supervision of doctors and professors.

Apart from the special subjects, the program includes the study of interdisciplinary subjects, electives, the choice of which depends on the main specialization. After finishing the course the students have to take qualification examination. The certificate is granted in accordance with satisfactory results and it gives the right to start medical practice.
The advanced training of doctors is based on the four courses: doctors of general practice (family medicine), pediatric surgery, pharmacy, medical ecology and sanitary-epidemiological control. The training is performed in cycles of thematic advanced education, general training and specialization which lasts from one week to three months.
The advanced training of the teachers of medical colleges of Russia has been performed during 30 years. The university is the base for the activities of the Coordinational Council of the joint work with the medical, pharmaceutical colleges of Tatarstan and Mary El republic.

Scientific research
Academic research work of the university covers a wide range of areas in clinical elaboration on the problems of physiology and pathology of the cardiovascular system, diagnostics and treatment of malignant neoplasm, age peculiarities of child’s organism in the normal state and pathological, solving of the modern problems of dental diseases, problems in diagnostics and prophylactic of infectious diseases, development of the scientific care of women’s illnesses, mothers, fetus and newborn, hygiene of labor, and the basics of pharmacy. Traditionally the most strongly developed scientific areas a the university are the fundamental developments. The scientific groups of neurophysiological laboratories of the departments of physiology, medical physics and histology work on the highest European level. During the last year we’ve got priority data of mechanism of release of the mediator in the neuromuscular synapse, its interaction with postsynaptic membrane, peculiarities of neuron structure and functioning. The department of biochemistry, headed by academician D. Zubairov created and proved the theory of continued blood coagulation and worked out technology of getting human blood preparations for clinical tests. This work was recognized by the State premium of Russian Federation. The premium and diploma was given by the Academy of Science to recognize the program “Blood circulation in the brain”, the university also received State premiums from the Tatarstan Republic in the areas of science and technology for physiology and pharmacology, 5 premiums VDNH, medals from Check Academy of Science named after I. Gavki and Y. Purkinie for the achievements in biophysics, premiums from the European and Russian linguistic competitions for introducing the theory of the convergent development of languages of the euro-american area, as well as the encouragement premium from the Fund of Soros.
The department of pharmacology with chemical laboratories elaborated and approbated medicine from phosphororganic compounds. Now they are investigating pharmacological characteristics of some antiblastomic preparations.
During the last years university has developed and introduced into the clinical practice the following preparations “Ksimedon”, “Fibronektin”, “Fosphobenzid”, “Glizifon”, “Mefopran”, “Tetramezin”, ‘Bacterial ribonucleasa”.
Members of the staff participate in the development of six international programs. For the last five years more than 200 reports were presented at the international conferences, symposiums and conferences (France, Germany, Turkey, Switzerland, Check Republic, England, USA, Holland, Italy, France, China).
University is extensively developing academic contacts with scientists in USA, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Check Republic and France.
There are three scientific councils which supervise the process of defending the thesis in 9 specializations: internal diseases, cardiology, hygiene, pediatrics, pathological physiology, normal physiology, dentistry, pharmaceutics, organization of healthcare.
Student scientific society works regularly and is quite active. Especially for the distinguish
ed students special scholarships named after remarkable scientists of the Kazan medical school are being given out.

International Relations

One of the main activities of the university is the development of the international relations which helps establish the international status of the university, strengthen mutually beneficial relationships with academic, scientific and medical organizations of other countries, as well the integration of the university in the international system of higher medical education and medical help.
During last years the university actively participated in the international projects
IREX - USAID and TEMPUS . The professors and chief residents from Yale University are coming each year to give lectures in “evidence-based medicine”.
Since 1995 we are the member of International Association of Medical Students and
our fourth-sixth year students have their summer practice in Europe , Africa and Latin America.
International club “Medical student” was organized in 1996.
Many departments of the university have their direct contacts with different scientific and clinical institutions in Europe,Asia, and America.

Scientific library

The library of the university has more than one million books of scientific and teaching literature.It has the subscription of 354 foreign and 254 Russian scientific medical journals.

Recreation facilities
The climate in Kazan is temperate,with warm sunny summers and snowy winters with mild frost. Students can participate in year-round recreation, including football,tennis, basketball, swimming in summer, or skiing and skating in winter. Our university encourages the broadest participation of its students in a wide variety of athletic programs. During holidays the students can relax in the camp “Medic” in the woods on the bank of the Volga river.

Stavropol State Medical Academy

Stavropol State Medical Academy was founded in 1938. Nowadays, after 6 decades, the Academy belongs to the ten leading medical institutes in Russian Federation. It is a big teaching, research and methodical center of the Northern Caucasus. Its activity has been pointed to with a high international award "Earthmaker", which certifies belonging to a community of world leaders in different branches of industry, science, culture and health care.

Pavlov and many more-were among the Founding Fathers of the Academy. And still, the higly skilled researh and teaching professionals are in the pride of our hearts. Academy has 66 chairs where more than 50 Scince Doctors, 152 readers, 274 Science Candidates and 180 qualified teachers work. Of the whole number of teachers, 20 are members of different international academies and Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, 28 are the Honored Physicians of the Russian Federation, 2 - Honored Scientists of the Russian Federation, and 2 - the Honored High School Workers.

Our graduates are the trademarks of the Academy. They are highly skilled professionals who work in different places of our country, often being in charge of Research Institutes, faculties, and chairs. More than 20000 physicians graduated from the Academy.

These days it has 3 faculties - general, pediatric and dentist, with 2700 students from Russia. Since 1961, more than 700 physicians, residents and fellows from 51 countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America graduated. Many of them became leading figures in their countries' health care. Now there are 300 foreign students from 27 countries. Teaching is made according to curricula, specially designed and approved by the Russian Ministry of Health. Academy's national rating in terms of foreign students' education quality is 11. It is among the 12 medical schools in Russia accepted by the Indian Medical Council.

The Post-Diploma Education Faculty is one of the largest in Russia and has a set of unique departments. Up to 2000 physicians and nurses annually refresh their skills in 16 specialties. The Faculty also trains nursery school teachers from all over the country.

High creative potential of the teaching personnel, modern laboratory equipment allows to perform meaningful research projects, capable of affecting not only the Stavropol health system, but also the whole country's. Many times the results of the research projects running in the Academy were presented all over Russia and abroad and were widely acknowledged. Our professors' names were included into the "List of 100 Leading World Scientists" and the "Who's Who in the World Science".

In 1993 a dissertation council was opened up in the Academy. Most every month, public dissertation "defenses" take place.

From the very first steps on the road to medical profession, the students begin to participate in different research projects. They work within the "Students' and Young Researchers' Science Society", showing their results at annual conferences. Their best works often won different prizes in all-Russia and international students' forums.

Stavropol State medical academy has four teaching buildinhs, dentistry outpatient department, and clinics of eye microsurgery, borderline psychic disorders, and vertebroneurology. All the clinical departments are located in the regional and city hospitals and equipped with modern diagnostic and treatment technologies.

In the Academy, all the conditions necessary for successful acquiring medical knowledge are present. The students individually perform laboratory and clinical tests, take advantage of modern learning technologies. With transition to the general practitioners' training, they spend more time in the outpatient's depts, where they get acquainted with the health care organization, see patients, learn emergency medicine, assist in various diagnostic procedures. Of special teaching importance are clinical rounds, patients' follow-ups, case histories writing with subsequent analysis. All this is intended to form diagnostic, treatment and rehabilitation skills. A great role in the improvement of physicians teachitg quality plays the post-diploma training -the fellowship programs, due to which graduates can critically improve their theoretical and practical skills.

The scientific and methodical levels of all kinds of classes improve constantly. The Academy has the inter-department computer classes with their power increasing gradually. In order to have access to the world medical knowledge, our leading scienticts are connected to the Internet. The Academy has its own publishing facility to dispatch new teaching and methodical material.

The Academy has a specialized scientific library, with more than 320000 books and magazines on shelves. The library offers all the services necessary for teaching and research.

More than half of the students (1827) live in four dormitories.

In 1996, the Academy finished construction of a big physical training facility with swimming pool, gym and training apparatus halls, solarium, sauna, massage and physician control rooms. This could help not only to give classes in physical culture, but also to organize recreational activities for students and employees.

Academy has its own sanatorium, with more than 900 people resting annually, and a sport recreational camp on the Black Sea shore.

Astrakhan is a big centre of oil and gas industry. It is situated on the bank of the Volga river, not far from the Caspian Sea. It is rich in vegetables, fruits, rice and fish. ASMA is one of the oldest medical institutions in Russia. In 2003, it is 85 years since the ASMA was founded. Since November 2002 the rector of the Medical Academy - Honoured Doctor of Russian Federation, Academician of Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, Doctor of Medicine, Professor V.M.Miroshnikov

During the years of its existence the ASMA has trained more than 23000 physicians. Many outstanding scientists worked at the Medical Academy and contributed much to the rapid development of the Academy as a powerful scientific medical and educational center on the Lower Volga. We should mention professors A.T. Lydsky, P.M. Toporkov, N.I. Artemyev, L.Ye. Karshina and many others who are well known in the world and national science.

At present the physicians with ASMA diplomas are working in different parts of Russia and abroad. Wide recognition of the Academy in the country, high qualification of its graduates are connected with the brilliant constellation of scientists who worked at the Academy and had a large number of the followers: professors N.I. Fyodorov, V.A. Gambursev, I.N. Alamdarov, V.B. Suchkov, V.M. Bahl and others.

Several scientific schools are founded at the Academy: embryology (prof. N.V. Popova-Latkina, A.S. Rudan, M.B. Novikov), cancero-embryonal antigens (prof. Ju.S. Tatarinov, A.V. Afanasyeva), stomach surgery (prof. V.G. Valter), therapy (Ya.A. Makarevich, P.P. Proshina, B.N. Levitan, A.A. Panov, T.N. Panova), urology (D.D. Murvanidze, N.M. Antonov, V.M. Miroshnikov). etc.

The Academy's research efforts are focused on the problems of mother-and-child health, oncology, gastroenterology, infectious pathology, medical ecology as well as morphofunctional organization of the living system in normal, pathological and individual development.

Every year Academy publishes about 1000 research papers in different central and regional issues, takes part in scientific conferences, symposia and congresses. Each chair has students' research section, Russian and foreign students take part in them. In 1986 the Academy received a new comfortable building. At present the Academy has two buildings for classes, five student hostels and a training basis of 30 municipal curative - preventive establishments. All clinical bases are equipped with modern facilities to train students at a higher scientific and professional level. In particular, all types of US-diagnostics, thermovision, angiography, endoscopic technique, highly effective means of treatment by hyperbaric oxygenation, laser therapy, modern efferent methods of de-toxication and many others are widely used here.

In 1995 the Astrakhan State Medical Institute was renamed into the Astrakhan State Medical Academy.

There is a fundamental scientific library. It can provide everybody with update bibliographic data through its computer system. Many chairs are equipped with computer classes.

Industrious students of the Academy can have a rest in sports and health recreation camp on the picturesque river bank, at eight branches of the Faculty of extracurricular education, art and sports club or student's theatre.

ASMA has a good experience in the preparation of the foreign students. In the last two decades around 2500 students from more than 50 countries graduated from the Academy. At present many students from Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America study at the Faculty of Foreign Students.

Duration of the course at the Faculty of General Medicine is_6_years. The medium of instruction is English and Russian. During the whole period of study textbooks, course materials, free Internet access are provided to students.

After completion a graduate gets the "Doctor of Medicine" degree, with specialization in therapy, surgery, ophthalmology, infectious diseases, dermatology, nervous diseases, psychiatry, radiotherapy, traumatology and orthopedics, medical jurisprudence, phthisiatry, anesthesiology and reanimation, obstetrics and gynecology, clinical biochemistry.

The academic year begins in September 1, every year. But the students can get admission to the preparatory faculty up to December. The preparatory faculty trains the foreign students for their study in the main course of medicine.

Arriving in Russia, students enter the preparatory faculty at the best universities. The duration of the course is about 38 weeks (one academic year). The aim of the course is to form general knowledge, necessary for studying adjacent disciplines later. Classes begin with learning of Russian language. In 2 months they will begin studying Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Language of science, history and drawing. This program gives foreign students the possibility to speak Russian in the level, necessary to get a Certificate that opens the door of the universities in Russia. At the preparatory faculty you can choose among 3 profiles of education: medico-biological, technical and humanitarian. Admittance to the preparatory faculty lasts from the 1st of September till 31st of December. Classes start according to the group staffing (5-10 people in a group). It is recommended to come to Russia for studying at the preparatory faculty by the end of September - beginning of October. Arriving later you will have to find additional time and some intensive educational courses to catch the group (the educational programs are worked out professionally to help the student, coming late, to get knowledge in the full volume, according to the strictly controlled program by the Russian government). After completing the preparatory faculty, students can continue their studies at the same University or change it, if they want to. As African students joke that due to the high humidity in winter, -10C° in Russia is felt easer than +15 in Africa, and +25 in Russia is the same as +40 degrees in Africa. So there is no need to worry about climatic conditions. In cold months constant temperature of +20...+22 degrees is kept by the central heating. During a week of studies students don't have much time for entertainment, because they are greatly occupied by studies. However, at weekend they have a plenty of possibilities to relax and to regain strength. In every city you can find a kaleidoscope of places for entertainment. There are discotheques, sport complexes, theatres and concert halls at your service. It is also wonderful to walk around the town, visiting places of interest. However, it is necessary to collect all documents in order 1-1,5 months before the studies start, i.e. in July. As a rule, drawing up an invitation via the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and an entrance visa from the Russian Embassy in foreign countries take about a month.
